Marcel Noebels scored the winning goal in the shootout, while Jonas Müller, Zach Boychuk and Matt White scored for the capital city in regular time.
After two defeats, the polar bears celebrated a sense of achievement in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). On Sunday afternoon, the German champions beat Adler Mannheim 3-1 (1-3, 0-0, 2-0, 0-0, 1-0) in a penalty shoot-out against Adler Mannheim.
In front of 12,176 spectators in the Mannheim Arena, the Eisbären started concentrated and took the lead with a goal from Müller. However, the lead only lasted 52 seconds before Tim Wohlgemuth equalized for the home side.
The guests had hardly anything to oppose the following pressure phase of the Kurpfälzer. Sinan Akdag and David Wolf gave Mannheim a two-goal advantage within a few minutes.
In the second third, the Berliners managed to balance the match again, but were also lucky that the hosts didn’t convert some clear chances.
The capitals were able to find their way back into the game in the final section: Boychuk used a four-on-three power play to score, White scored to equalize. The extra time remained goalless, in the penalty shoot-out Noebels then ensured the decision in favor of the Berliners.
