The Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV), together with Lantis and De Werkvennootschap, will tackle 42 highway yards in the coming months. It also involves major interventions on bridges and tunnels. In total there will be 81 kilometers of new or renewed road surface. An overview of where you can mainly expect nuisance.
Structural interventions on highways, tunnels and bridges are required every year. Today, Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters (Open Vld) announced 42 major construction sites for this year. An investment of 476 million euros is involved, excluding Oosterweel.
Flanders is still struggling with a maintenance backlog, admits Minister Peeters. “By investing in the renovation, renewal and maintenance of our infrastructure, we are ensuring the necessary turnaround,” she says.
In addition to normal highway renovation, various tunnel and bridge works are also planned. These included the renewal of the lighting and wall panels in the Kennedytunnel, the construction of a calamity crossing in the Vierarmentunnel, the thorough renovation of the Leonardtunnel and the renovation of the viaduct in Vilvoorde.

The road works will of course cause disruption. “So before you leave, check out road-traffic.be”, advises AWV. “This way you can see exactly which highways are working with which nuisance and which are planned.”
In concrete terms, the road user will biggest hindrance experience at these six places in Flanders:
• the E313 with the reconstruction of the bridge at Wommelgem (4): serious nuisance, especially during the Easter holidays
• the E40 with the replacement of the porches and the construction of breakdown ports at Sterrebeek (35)
• the renovation of the Trumpet connection R8/A19 (25), serious nuisance to the Aalbeke complex in phase 2 (from July, duration 2 years)
• the Brussels inner and outer ring (R0) with the start of the renovation of the viaduct at Vilvoorde (34)
• the E40 with the replacement of the railway bridge at Erpe-Mere (20), serious nuisance for traffic on two lanes, from August to November in the direction of Ghent
• the Kennedy tunnel on the R1 with the renewal of the lighting and wall panels (8), serious nuisance during weekend closures
