About 40,000 people visited King’s Day in Maastricht on Wednesday. The police look back on an event without significant incidents.
“There are only a few people who have become unwell, for example because of the heat,” says a spokeswoman.
Square closed
Mayor Annemarie Penn also looks back on a successful program. Although the Vrijthof had to be closed after noon. “The square was too full,” explains the mayor.
The visit of the royal family for King’s Day lasted from 11 a.m. to just after 1 p.m. There was room for 23,000 people along the route.
Pride
“I loved it,” Penn continues. “Especially that feeling of togetherness. I hope we can keep this up. Because without it we run great risks.” Penn accompanied the royal family on their journey through a sun-drenched city center in Maastricht.

“There was a lot of music, we wanted that”, she looks back. “Because Maastricht is the city of music. It makes your heart beat a little faster. When I was on stage at the Vrijthof, I saw all those orange-clad people. That says a lot, especially now with Ukraine. That this is still possible here . It was fantastic to see!”
‘He listened well’
“We had a very nice day,” Penn concludes. Sometimes there was a threat of delay in the program in the two-hour route through the city. “But when I said to the king: we must continue, he gave another hand, but he listened carefully!”
