40 Flemish cities and municipalities clear the streets on Car-Free Sunday
This event is part of the European Mobility Week (16-22 September). Cars make way for numerous activities: bicycle races, soapbox races and performances.
Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Aalst, Mechelen, Ypres, Kortrijk, Lier, Lommel and Sint-Niklaas, among others, have a car-free Sunday. A total of 48 Flemish municipalities are banning cars for one day this year. “And there can certainly be many more,” says Sander Vanderstraeten of Mobiel 21. “I would like to encourage all mayors and aldermen to show ambition. Especially with the climate objectives in mind, a car-free Sunday is a no-brainer. “
All nineteen Brussels municipalities are also making their streets car-free. The entire region will be closed off (from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.), making it one of the largest car-free zones in Europe for a day. The initiative did not lie solely with Brussels municipal authorities. Citizens, associations and schools could also request street closures to experience their own car-free day.
