4 arrests after video in which 2 naked women are publicly humiliated in India | Abroad

The video depicts a large group of men as those two naked women push and grope around on a country road. The women are chased into a field before the video cuts. According to a complaint filed by a relative of one of the women, one of them, a 21-year-old woman, was raped by the group. A third woman should have taken off her clothes, but she is not in the picture. According to the indictment, two male family members were also murdered by the same group prior to the images.

Four men were arrested in connection with the video on Thursday, a day after the gruesome footage went viral on social media. Police say more arrests are expected.

However, the police are subject to a lot of criticism. The facts already occurred in May and the complaint was already filed that same month. Despite this, it took more than 70 days for any action to be taken. It is only now that the video has gone viral that authorities seem to be under enough pressure to act. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke out about the crisis in Manipur for the first time on Thursday.

After the news of the arrests broke, a group of Meitei women from the area set fire to the house of one of the suspects. In addition, hundreds of women gathered in the capital of Manipur state on Friday to protest the violence in the video.

The incidents captured on video are part of ethnic riots that broke out in Manipur in May. It concerns a conflict between the indigenous Kuki minority, of which the women in the video are a part, and the Meitei majority.

The violence erupted after protests by the Kukis, who opposed an application by the Meiteis to be included in the Scheduled Tribes list. That would give the group a special status. The Kukis feared that this status would enable the Meiteis to buy land in the hilly areas mainly inhabited by them. A Manipur Supreme Court judge has ordered the state government to consider the request of the Meitei community.
