3rd league: Wehen Wiesbaden defeats Verl and stays in the promotion race

Wehen Wiesbaden has ended its negative series in the 3rd division. Against SC Verl, the SVWW achieved a very important success in the fight for promotion.

After the last two defeats, SV Wehen Wiesbaden has reported back to the 2nd Bundesliga in the fight for promotion. The Hessians defeated SC Verl 2-1 (1-1) in their home game on Saturday and, after three games without a win, scored three points again.

Kianz Froese gave the hosts a 1-0 lead (14th). Shortly before the break, Barne Pernot equalized with a dream goal from distance (45′). After the break, Ivan Prtajin made it 2-1 (61st).

Labor Wiesbaden stops relegation place

Wehen Wiesbaden remains fourth in the table and continues to rank on the relegation place. Table leader Elversberg missed out on promotion due to a defeat in second place in Freiburg on Saturday. Dresden and Saarbrücken – next to the SVWW in the field of pursuers – did not show any weakness with their victories.

After the game, coach Markus Kauczinski spoke of a “deserved victory” and a “energy performance” from his team: “They did a great job because it was a tough opponent.” For Wehen Wiesbaden it was the first win against “fear opponents” Verl in the sixth third division duel.

Froese for striker Hollerbach in the starting XI

Kauczinski had to rebuild his starting eleven. Froese joined the team for the suspended goalscorer Benedict Hollerbach (5th yellow). Gino Fechner and Nico Rieble also joined the team for Bjarke Jacobsen and Sebastain Mrowca.

After the two defeats against Meppen and in Dresden, Kauczinski swore his team before the game to the final phase of the season with only three games left: “We have to realize that everything is at stake now and that small things will decide in the end.”

At the beginning of the game, the hosts were lucky in the penultimate home game of the second half of the season when Yari Otto’s ball just missed the SVWW goal. The Hollerbach substitute showed skill up front: Froese switched the fastest in the penalty area and shot the ball past the guest goalkeeper into the far corner to make it 1-0 (14 ‘).

SVWW vulnerable in defence

Wehen then developed more pressure, was present in the duels, but remained vulnerable and allowed East Westphalia, who were stuck in the middle of the table, opportunities. Michel Stöcker (32nd) and Vinko Sapina (38th) had the equalizer on their feet. Froese also missed good chances on the other side (37th and 40th).

Instead of extending the lead, the SVWW conceded the performance-based 1:1 before the break. Verl’s central defender Barne Pernot scored a dream goal with a long-range shot from around 25 meters (45′).

After the break, goalscorer Prtajin proved again how valuable he is for the Red-Blacks: he pushed a cross over the line and made it 2-1 (61st). It was the Croatian’s 15th goal of the season. The game remained tight and exciting until the end. The hosts still had chances to extend the result. John Iredale missed several opportunities.
