After three defeats and two draws, Viktoria Cologne has again achieved a “threesome” in the 3rd league. The Cologne team won 2-0 (1-0) against the U23s of the Bundesliga soccer team SC Freiburg on Sunday.
After five games without a win, a home game against the bottom of the league is most likely to fall into the mandatory win category. The Cologne team acted accordingly and in the 5th minute Stefano Russo fired a first warning shot from the edge of the penalty area, which still missed the target.
Marseiler can cross unchallenged and Becker scores
The warning apparently did not reach the guests. They let the home team act far too carelessly around the penalty area when Luca Marseiler was able to calmly get the ball in the 11th minute and find André Becker’s head in front of the goal with his cross. He had no trouble putting Viktoria in the lead from close range.
The goal seemed to inspire Becker creatively. When he was served in front of the goal by Patrick Koronkiewicz in the 24th minute, he tried an overhead kick. Worth seeing, but ultimately harmless because the ball flew straight into the arms of Freiburg goalkeeper Sebastian Hornung.
Freiburg was largely harmless on offense
Freiburg, on the other hand, only managed a dangerous penalty area action in the 32nd minute when Franci Bouebari crossed sharply in front of the Cologne goal. However, the cross didn’t bring anything countable.
Shortly after the break, things were already ablaze again after a corner in the Freiburg penalty area, but ultimately SC keeper Hornung didn’t have to intervene because the people in front of him blocked several shots. However, the guests then moved the game more into Cologne’s half and attacked the home team early – but there were no chances.
Engelhardt pass leads to Cologne’s second goal
For their part, the cathedral townspeople were waiting for counterattack situations. They didn’t owe David Philipp’s 2-0 lead in the 57th minute to a counterattack, but rather to a precise pass from Florian Engelhardt. The 20-year-old fed Philipp in the penalty area and he extended the lead with a shot into the far corner.
There was never any sign of Freiburg catching up. One of the guests’ more dangerous shots was a long-range shot from Luca Marino in the 73rd minute that went past the left post (73′).
At the end of the competition year, Viktoria will compete at SC Verl next Wednesday (7 p.m.). The Verlers are still part of the extended circle of promotion candidates, but have recently suffered defeats in Münster (1:3) and at home against Ulm (0:3).
