3rd league: VfB Lübeck fights in vain against Dynamo Dresden

As of: September 16, 2023 4:29 p.m

Third division soccer team VfB Lübeck lost its home game against Dynamo Dresden 0-1 (0-0). The promoted team demanded everything from the league leaders on Saturday (September 16th, 2023) – and created a surprising number of chances. Only: the ball didn’t want to go into the goal.

Coach Lukas Pfeiffer’s team apparently needed the goal shortly after half-time to believe in their own possibilities in the duel with the Saxons. Given the large number of good chances, there would even be one in the end draw was almost too little. “In the end, we played a good game. But that doesn’t help us. It’s a shame”said Cyrill Akono, who was missing due to injury, at the NDR microphone. But against the best defense in the league on paper – only three goals conceded in six games – the Lübeck team didn’t even manage to score a goal.

And so they finally had to accept their third competitive defeat in a row – the table continued to decline. However, the way the newcomer presented itself against Dresden in the second half should give VfB courage for the tasks ahead. Akono found: “Against Münster we have to put the balls in.” The duel with and with the co-promoter is next Saturday (September 23rd, 2023, 2 p.m.).

First the keeper saves for Lübeck, then the crossbar

Coach Pfeiffer had prepared his team well against Dresden. Although his team Weakened by a few failures, they held up well against the league leaders right from the start. However, the Saxons quickly tried to take advantage of any possible uncertainty among the home team. Driven by Niklas Hauptmann, the older brother of Lübeck’s Marius Hauptmann (initially injured on the bench), the guests came close several times. But they didn’t present Philipp Klewin in the VfB goal with difficult tasks.

On the other hand, the Lübeck offensive couldn’t provide relief often enough. Mats Facklam, who replaced Akono in the center of the attack with a thigh injury, barely even got to the ball. The Schleswig-Holsteiners usually lost the ball during the build-up to the game. At least they got a handful of corners, but Pfeiffer’s men didn’t capitalize on them either.

On the other hand, things got very tight again shortly before the break: Dynamo’s center forward Stefan Kutschke was denied by Klewin from close range. Then that was it Keeper Already beaten when Jakob Lemmer shot, the ball landed on the crossbar.

VfB creates chances every minute

The guests started the second half similarly powerfully. But Klewin was initially able to prevent the goal from being conceded. Just after Tarik Gözüsirin had caused applause from the stands with his long-range shot that went just over the crossbar (50th), things went wrong: the Lübeck defense was just running behind a dynamo attack. In the end, Janek Sternberg couldn’t get into the duel against Lemmer and he shot well placed and powerful to take the lead (51′).

Now the Lübeckers were challenged – and suddenly the chances were there. Facklam ran a through ball but shot from an unmarked position Keeper Stefan Drljaca (67th). Just two minutes later, Mirko Boland scored, but the ball went past the post. And barely forced it for 60 seconds joker Pascal Breier Drljaca made a brilliant parade.

Lübeck doesn’t give up until the final whistle

And Lübeck stuck with it. There were chances every minute: After a counterattack, Breier failed again Keeper (76′), a Gözüsirin shot narrowly missed the corner (77′), Breier’s next shot went past the far corner (79′).

With more luck than sense, the Dresden team initially survived the pressure phase. But the home team threw everything forward again in the final phase. Substitute Manuel Farrona Pulido crossed smoothly from the left side and Breier had his next big chance. And no matter how well Drljaca saved again, the newcomer should have scored his first goal for VfB here at the latest (88th). The final point was a hit on the crossbar by fellow substitute Tommy Grupe (90+4). So it remained a bitter defeat.
