3rd league: Saarbrücken wins in Saar-Derby against Elversberg

Status: 06.08.2022 4:00 p.m

1. FC Saarbrücken won 2-0 at SV Elversberg in the first third division Saar derby in eight years. The decisive goals landed Julian Günther-Schmidt with a foul penalty and Pius Krätschmer shortly before the end of the second half.

A sold-out stadium, an enthusiastic atmosphere: on the second day of the game in the third division, the Saarland third division teams met in the Saar derby – for the first time in the third division in eight years.

Shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Kaiserlinde stadium, the game between SV Elversberg and 1. FC Saarbrücken kicked off.

Both teams showed respect for each other at the start of the game. After all, SVE had been unbeaten for 22 competitive games. But FCS didn’t have to hide either and went into the game with confidence.

Respect was palpable

The first 30 minutes of the game were rather tough, the goal chances were largely absent. Although the guests from 1. FC Saarbrücken had chances right at the beginning of the first half with a free kick and a corner in the opposing half, it was not really dangerous for SVE. The first corner for the hosts didn’t bring any concrete scoring opportunity either.

Both teams closed quickly in midfield – there was little getting through in the direction of the opposing penalty area. The Elversbergers put pressure on in the meantime, but didn’t really get through the strong defense of the Saarbrücken team. And they, in turn, did not play out the few counterattack options.

Fast end for FCS captain Frantz

After just under half an hour, captain Mike Frantz from 1. FC Saarbrücken went down and had to limp off the field – Pius Krätschmer came on instead. Frantz had injured his thigh a few minutes earlier in a duel and had to be treated.

In the last quarter of an hour, however, things got dangerous: Uwe Koschinat’s team created the first real chance to score. But the Elversberg goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof parried – even the resulting corner kick didn’t give the guests the lead they had hoped for.

Shortly before the end of the first half, the hosts had their first big chance, but FCS keeper Daniel Batz fended off with his foot. In the end, the teams drew 0-0 at the break.

FCS lead after a penalty

The second half started in a similar way in the first few minutes: Elversberg tried to get through to the guests’ penalty area, but Saarbrücken’s strong defense closed it down.

And then: Marcel Correia fouled Julian Günther-Schmidt in the SVE penalty area. The referee awarded Günther Schmidt a penalty – and Schmidt scored. FCS took the lead around five minutes into the second half.

The goal brought a little more pace into the game. Both sides were more aggressive, but the big scoring chances were largely absent for both clubs. In the 75th minute, Luca Schnellbacher (SV Elversberg) received a yellow card for a foul on Bjarne Thoelke.

Krätschmer seals derby victory

Then, in the 84th minute, Pius Krätschmer scored his first goal of the season and gave FCS their second goal. In doing so, he sealed the Saarbrücken derby victory.

The climbers from Elversberg didn’t have a chance to turn the game around. After five minutes of stoppage time, the redeeming final whistle came. 1. FC Saarbrücken took the three points home with them, the Saar clubs drew 0:2.

In the table, FCS is sorted at the top with six points thanks to a better goal difference before 1860 Munich. Elversberg slips down to fifth place with three points.

It continues in the third division on Tuesday in the third matchday. SV Elversberg meets VfB Oldenburg at 6.30 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., the Borussia Dortmund II team welcomes FCS.
