After release
One month after ex-captain Felix Bastians was released, Rot-Weiss Essen and the 35-year-old are going their separate ways. The contract, which originally ran until the end of the season, was terminated by mutual consent on Thursday. The third division club had described the measure at the beginning of October as having “no alternative” in order “to provide a clear impetus.” The central defender no longer met the expectations of a captain, RWE explained at the time.
“We have had very constructive discussions with Felix over the past few days and agreed to terminate his contract early. With this decision, everyone involved now has the opportunity to look forward. Felix has achieved a lot in his two years with us. He played a significant role in both promotion in 2022 and staying in the league last season. We thank him for that. We wish Felix and his family all the best for the future!” said CEO Marcus Uhlig.
Bastians, who has played 69 games (eleven goals) for Rot-Weiss Essen since September 2021, added: “Even though the end was certainly not what I had imagined, overall I look back positively on my time at RWE. Celebrating promotion and leading this club onto the field as captain was something very special.”
