Preußen Münster further moved away from the bottom of the 3rd league table on Sunday with a home win against SSV Ulm. Joel Grodowski played a decisive role in the Prussians’ 3:2 (2:0) success with two goals.
After two defeats at Dynamo Dresden (0:1) and Jahn Regensburg (1:2), the Münster team had to get back on the road to success in the duel between the promoted teams and Ulm.
Grodowski puts Münster in the lead with a brace
Marc Lorenz paved the way into this path in the 11th minute – with a long throw into the Ulm penalty area. Luca Bazzoli hit the post after this throw-in was extended, and Joel Grodowski quickly put the rebound into the back of the net.
The guests felt Grodowski’s speed of action and determination once again before the break. After the 25-year-old had fought for the ball himself just in front of the center circle, he moved towards Ulm’s penalty area, shook off all the UImers and hit the right corner with a powerful shot from around 17 meters (21′).
Great Ulm chance in stoppage time
However, there was little to be seen of the people of Ulm. A free kick from Léo Scienza, which flew centrally over the Prussian goal guarded by Johannes Schenk, was one of the better offensive actions (27th). Offensively, the guests remained inconspicuous and vulnerable in front of their own penalty area. In the 33rd minute, Malik Batmaz dribbled into the penalty area after a negligent pass from Ulm, where his shot was cleared for a corner in desperate need.
Shortly before the half-time whistle, Ulm had a great chance to score, but Simon Scherder prevented it with a sharp cross from the right side – an Ulm player just had to finish at his back.
Supposed Preliminary decision from the penalty spot
After the break, the visitors’ intended comeback was initially thwarted. As with the first goal, a standard situation was the starting point for the 0:3. After a corner, SSV goalkeeper Christian Ortag dropped the ball, which was already safe, and in an attempt to correct his mistake, touched Grodowski, who fell to the ground. The referee decided on a penalty and Lorenz converted (54′).
However, the game was not yet decided. The guests were also awarded a penalty after a quick advance that the Münster team illegally stopped in the penalty area and Nicolas Jann reduced the score to 1:3 (68′). This goal gave the Ulm team a slight tailwind, which they used just six minutes later to make it 2-3 – after a short corner, Tobias Rühle pushed the ball over the line with his chest in the middle (74th).
Two hits on the crossbar in the final phase
Bitter, as Daniel Kyerewaa had made it 4-1 shortly before after a pass from Grodowski. SSV keeper Ortag was also able to defuse another Grodowski attempt with a strong foot save (76th), so that things remained exciting in Münster until the end. In the 90th minute, Thorben Deters narrowly missed making it 4-2 with a lob onto the crossbar – just like Shaibou Oubeyapwa, who also hit the crossbar again in stoppage time. But Ulm no longer punished the missed chances – the score remained 3-2 for the hosts.
The Prussians have to play away again on the next match day. Their game against the SC Freiburg reserves kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
