Preußen Münster achieved their third win in a row against MSV Duisburg in a 3-1 (0-0) win on Friday evening and climbed further up the 3rd league. MSV remains deep in the relegation battle.
In Münster on Hammer Straße, two teams of the moment met on Friday evening 3rd league each other. Münster started with two recent away wins, but the guests from Duisburg, who are in danger of relegation, had also recently won twice in a row. Another threesome in Münster would take the “Zebras” above the relegation zone for the first time after months of depression – that was the initial situation.
It had only been two minutes of play and MSV could have – or even should – taken the desired direction. A long forward strike landed in the feet of Alexander Esswein. The experienced attacker penetrated the 16 and crossed the five for Daniel Ginczek. But the unbelievable happened to the winter newcomer: the ball missed and Ginczek didn’t hit the ball in front of the empty box.
Ritter sees red, MSV outnumbered
The Prussians only caught themselves after ten minutes and were only then able to calm down the game, which had been stormy until then. And very slowly the hosts took the initiative. In the 26th minute, a long ball from the Prussia defense into the path of striker Joel Grodowski. MSV defender Joshua Bitter underestimated the situation and was the last man to clear the Prussia attacker – a red card. MSV only had ten people left on the pitch.
The Prussians initially had problems making something of the majority. Duisburg remained on par, showed strong possession of the ball and was strong in defense. At halftime the score remained 0-0.
Bochama comes in and scores
Whatever Duisburg had planned in the dressing room for the second half, it was abruptly destroyed less than a minute after the restart. Münster’s Jano ter Horst had prevailed on the left side and brought the ball into the penalty area, where Yassine Bouchama, who had just been substituted, was in the right position and scored to make it 1-0 (46th).
A shock for Duisburg, who subsequently struggled not to score their second goal straight away. Münster stuck with it, literally restricting MSV at times, but failed to create any further concrete opportunities.
Tension despite being outnumbered – until Wegkamp scores
The score remained narrowly 1-0 until the final phase – the spectators in Münster had to nervously accept the shaky result. But Münster has Gerrit Wegkamp. The 30-year-old, who has been playing for the Prussians since 2021, seemingly ended the tremors in the 76th minute with the goal to make it 2-0. Standing at the near post, he smashed a low cross into the goal.
But the MSV was not yet beaten. Alaa Bakir, who was also substituted, reduced the score to 2-1 in the 82nd minute thanks to Robiin Müller’s assist from close range. The stoppage time was tough until Wegkamp made everything clear with his second goal to make it 3-1 in the seventh minute of extra time.
Münster next plays at Erzgebirge Aue on Saturday March 2nd. The next day he steps out MSV Duisburg at home against the second representation of Borussia Dortmund.
