3rd league: MSV Duisburg missed a surprise against leaders Regensburg

As of: February 4, 2024 10:24 p.m

The relegation worries at MSV Duisburg have increased with another defeat in the 3rd league. On Sunday, the penultimate leader Jahn Regensburg lost 0-1 (0-1) despite a courageous game.

MSV coach Boris Schommers had said before the game that there was nothing to lose against the league leaders, but above all they had to win duels in order to perhaps create a surprise.

MSV keeper Müller prevents an early deficit

That went wrong when Santiago Castaneda let the ball get stolen as he went forward. Jahn made the game quick, the cross came from the right to the second post, where Niclas Anspach failed with his direct shot at MSV keeper Vincent Müller’s extended left leg (4th minute).

That the Duisburg team had no intention of isolating themselves in their own half against the league leaders. They showed their first big chance in the 17th minute. Rolf Feltscher crossed from the right into the penalty area, where Niklas Kölle forced the Regensburg goalkeeper Alexander Weidinger to make an initial flying save.

Behind after Duisburg’s negligence in defense

Afterwards, it wasn’t immediately apparent that the front runner was visiting the second-to-last team in the table. The Duisburg team held up well, but showed fatal negligence in defense in the 35th minute. Rasim Bulic was too unchallenged to shoot in the penalty area. Müller directed it against the post, but none of his defenders were there to clear the ball as it bounced into the middle, but Jahn striker Elias Huth, who put the ball into the goal in front of Müller.

In stoppage time in the first half, MSV was lucky not to concede another goal. Müller parried a shot from a tight angle by Dominik Kother, and this time Huth didn’t put the rebound into the net, but well over the goal.

MSV is not rewarded for dedicated play

After the break, Duisburg appeared to be much more aggressive in front of their own audience. Given their eight points gap to the saving bank, they had great alternatives 3rd league but not either. A hard-hit free kick from Marvin Knoll, which Weidinger had to punch out of the goalkeeper’s corner, was essentially the first warning shot (48′).

The big chances to score didn’t materialize, but the action on the pitch had now largely shifted to the Regensburg goal. In the 61st minute, Knoll had his next chance with a header from a corner, but put the ball on the wrong side of the post. In the 67th minute, Anspach should have made the decision in favor of Regensburg when he finished alone in the penalty area in front of Müller, but put the ball on the left outside post.

So the Duisburg team stayed in the game, but had a difficult time in the final phase against Regensburg who were lurking on the counterattack. Despite promising advances, they were no longer able to find the decisive gaps in the visitors’ defense, so they now have to hope that next Saturday at SC Verl they will be able to take something with them in the fight against falling into the fourth division.
