The fact remains that MSV Duisburg cannot win under coach Boris Schommers. At least the defense held up against Saarbrücken, so that the Zebras were able to move up one place in the table.
It’s a little bit of hope that… MSV Duisburg won on Wednesday evening at 1. FC Saarbrücken. Although the 0-0 scoreline is actually not enough for the Zebras given that they are still eight points behind the savior bank, at least the Duisburg team were able to leave last place in the table.
It wasn’t an offensive fireworks display that the teams conjured up on the difficult-to-play pitch. Duisburg in particular was afraid to take risks, but defended cleverly and made the spaces narrow. The home team, who recently celebrated three competitive game wins in a row, rarely made it into the MSV penalty area.
Hardly any chances from the game
The few chances that both teams had in the first half resulted from dead balls. After 27 minutes it was a free kick from Thomas Pledl that got longer and longer. FCS keeper Tim Schreiber was just able to direct the ball over the crossbar. Just three minutes later, Saarbrücken’s Amine Naifi’s attempt from almost 20 meters went just over the goal.
After the break, the FCS tried to increase the tempo and created the best opportunity of the game. However, Kai Brünker lost his nerve in front of MSV goalkeeper Vincent Müller. After an hour it was Müller again who saved his team from falling behind – this time against Boné Uaferro.
The Zebras’ offense remained patchy. There was a lack of precision, speed and courage. But once Duisburg appeared dangerous in front of Schreiber: the goalkeeper could only let a shot from Sebastian Mai ricochet, giving Jonas Michelbrink a great chance. However, his attempt from a tight angle only landed in the face of the FCS keeper (87th).
We have to win against Lübeck
At least coach Boris Schommers’ team saved the point over time. Now it’s time to gild it on Saturday in front of the home crowd against VfB Lübeck: against 17th in the table. A win is needed, otherwise it will be pretty dark for Duisburg during the winter break.
