Third division football team VfB Oldenburg missed their first win of the season. Lower Saxony lost 2:3 (0:1) to SV Elversberg on Tuesday evening. SV Meppen conceded a 0: 4 (0: 1) pack at TSV 1860 Munich.
In the first half, Oldenburg was not able to build on the good performance from last Saturday’s game against Munich’s “Löwen” (0:1). Coach Dario Fossi’s team was inferior to their co-promoters and at times had to do hard work in defense. The 0:1 deficit due to a header from SVE captain Kevin Conrad (23rd) after a corner kick from Jannik Rochelt was logical given the mixed VfB performance. Shortly thereafter, the Lower Saxony were lucky that Thore Jacobsen failed on aluminum (25th).
Only then did the hosts find their game a little better. It wasn’t until the 45th minute, however, before the former second division side got their first chance: Kebba Badjie didn’t put enough pressure behind the ball from a promising position and was denied by keeper Nicolas Kristof.
Zietarski equalizes shortly after the break
What Badjie was denied, Robert Zietarski managed shortly after the change of sides. The two-time goal scorer from the promotion first leg at BFC Dynamo (2-0) overcame keeper Kristof after a corner kick with a well-placed header (49th). The fact that the Pole came to the end more or less undisturbed testified to a certain drop in tension among the guests, who then did not perform as convincingly as in the first half. In the second round, VfB had more grip in the duels than the Saarlanders and also played forward in a more straightforward manner than their opponent.
Oldenburg conceded late goals
The reward for a very courageous and passionate performance was Badjie’s 2-1 lead. The new signing from Werder Bremen used an assist from Kamer Krasniqi (68′), who came on as a substitute in the 36th minute and brought a lot of momentum into the Oldenburg game. After that, VfB didn’t hole up in their own half to defend their lead, but instead pushed for the third goal.
This courageous approach initially seemed to be able to lead to success against a visibly unsettled Elversberger. Then the guests were lucky to equalize (84′) with a free kick that was initially blocked and fell at Sinan Tekerci’s feet. Shortly before the end of the game, they benefited from sloppy Oldenburg defense when Valdrin Mustafa appeared completely free in front of Pelle Boevink after a header from Luca Schnellbacher and overcame the keeper with a well-considered low shot (89′).
