SV Elversberg loses its away game at SC Freiburg and thus misses the opportunity to make promotion to the 2nd division perfect.
SV Elversberg did not convert the first of three match points this Saturday. A win would have been enough to make clear the premature promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga under their own steam. But in the end, Horst Steffen’s team suffered a defeat.
Quiet first half
Seven buses, and thus around a thousand fans, had traveled to the Breisgau for support. After the kick-off in the Dreisamstadion, they initially saw a very balanced game.
In the first half, possession was evenly distributed. The defensive lines were good and both teams had only a few penalty scenes.
Penalty for Freiburg
Immediately after the start of the second half, the best chance of the game so far came – but for Freiburg: Maximilian Breunig served Oscar Wiklöf centrally in front of the penalty area with a cross pass from the left. He fired a hard low shot from 18 meters, which flew just millimeters past the left post.
In the 58th minute, Jordy Makengo moved into the penalty area on the left and was knocked off his feet by Robin Fellhauer. Penalty for SC Freiburg! Lars Kehl coldly converted it into the right corner of the goal, while Nicolas Kristof was on his way to the left corner of the goal.
Freiburg increases to 2:0
Exactly ten minutes later, Freiburg followed suit: Substitute Patrick Lienhard was sent into the penalty area on the left with a long ball. Robin Fellhauer initially intercepted his pass in the middle of the penalty area. But he loses the leather to Lars Kehl shortly afterwards. He doesn’t miss the chance and puts the ball in the right corner of the goal from ten meters away.
In the 70th minute, Nick Woltemade had a good chance to score. His shot from 14 meters flew just over the crossbar. But eleven minutes later it works: Manuel Feil makes it 2-1. Until the final whistle, however, that was the only goal for the SVE. Depending on the outcome of the other games, even a draw would have been enough for early promotion. With the defeat, the promotion celebration has now been postponed.
Next match point in the home stadium
Next Saturday Horst Steffen’s team has the next chance to advance to the second division. The match against SV Wehen Wiesbaden begins at 2 p.m. – a home game at the Kaiserlinde.
