The game was originally scheduled for January 16, but was canceled due to several corona cases among the Berliners. The Lower Saxony had let themselves be duped by the promoted team in the first leg (0:4), but on Wednesday evening in stormy weather in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark they quickly made things clear. With the wind at their backs, they overran the hosts in the early stages and kept up the pressure in the second half.
The reward: In the table, the blue and yellow have moved up to one point behind second-placed 1. FC Kaiserslautern, but they also played one game more than the Palatinate. For Braunschweig, things continue on Saturday (2 p.m., live on NDR television and on NDR.de) with the Lower Saxony duel against fifth-placed VfL Osnabrück.
Braunschweig constant pressure – three goals in 18 minutes
BTSV coach Michael Schiele relied on three new players after the 1-1 draw against Freiburg II. Jomaine Consbruch, Niko Kijewski and Brian Behrendt rotated into the starting XI. The Lower Saxony went into the game offensively, attacked very early and forced the hosts to make defensive mistakes.
In this way, Consbruch set the goal twice: Once he served Maurice Multhaup, who scored from a free position (7′), and once Bryan Henning, whose shot was deflected (9′). Finally, after a corner from Multhaup, Braunschweig were lucky that the ball flew from Brooklyn Ezeh’s back into the net (18′). The lead was well deserved, especially since the guests had other very good chances. The best was missed by Jannis Nikolaou, who played across again in front of the goal instead of completing it himself (42nd).
BTSV also superior in the second half
After the restart, the Berliners now had the wind at their backs and promptly had the first chances to score. But Jakob Lewald (54th) and Moritz Seiffert (57th) failed because of the strongly reacting BTSV keeper Jasmin Fejzic. It was only a short revolt, because Braunschweig continued to hit mercilessly: A corner kick slipped through the Berlin defense to the second post, where Philipp Strompf scored to make it 4-0 – the game was over (61st).
Especially since the guests did not stop their offensive efforts afterwards. Robin Krausse (65th) and Sebastian Müller (68th) missed further BTSV goals. But the next Braunschweig goals were only postponed: A minute after being substituted on, Benjamin Girth nodded off to make it 5-0 (73rd) and increased it to 6-0 a little later (79th). The Braunschweig supporters (around 300 fans) shouldn’t have regretted the journey – and the 0:4 from the first leg no longer plays a role in their minds.
