3rd League: Borussia Dortmund’s U23 loses against relegated Sandhausen

As of: October 28, 2023 4:47 p.m

Despite a good start and an early lead, Borussia Dortmund’s U23s lost their home game against second division relegated SV Sandhausen on Saturday 1:2 (1:2).

The Dortmund team, reinforced by Thomas Meunier from the professional squad, who recently showed a convincing performance in the 3-1 win against Waldhof Mannheim, also started strongly against Sandhausen. After good preparatory work by Ole Pohlmann on the left wing, Julian Hettwer took the lead early (9th minute).

However, a somewhat unfortunate defensive action by Abdoulaye Kamara against Yassin Ben Balla led to a quick equalizer. When Kamara kicked his opponent in the heels after a free kick from Rouwen Hennings, the referee awarded a penalty, which set-piece expert Hennings coldly converted (16′).

Despite the setback, Dortmund remained in control, but somewhat surprisingly conceded the second goal before the break. They were initially able to clear a corner from Hennings, but Jonas Weik immediately shot it back towards the BVB goal from a long distance, before Max Geschwill steered it into the goal unstoppable for Marcel Lotka

The same players scored for Sandhausen as in the previous week against Verl. Only this time, the goals from Hennings and Geschwill were enough for not just one, but two points. Dortmund were more active in the second half, but didn’t create any compelling chances, while the visitors missed out on a better victory with good counterattack opportunities.

The Dortmund reserves have to play away again on the next match day. The game at FC Ingolstadt will kick off next Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
