Just like SVM’s high in the first half of the year (third place), the poor performance after the winter break (18th place) is also closely linked to Luka Tankulic. The offensive man recorded a sensational 15 scorer points (eleven goals) up to Christmas, since then only two goals have been added.
The game against Wehen Wiesbaden in front of 6,000 spectators was emblematic. In his sleep, Tankulic would have converted a chance in the first half of the season, like on Friday evening in the sixth minute of the game, when he headed the ball from close range. But in 2022, the 30-year-old fails. Twice as bitter, just five minutes later, the Meppener got on the losing road and conceded a bitter bankruptcy in the end.
Meppener don’t jump up from a direct free kick
Johannes Wurtz from Wehen converted a direct free kick to make it 1-0 for the guests – the players in the wall didn’t jump up and Constantin Frommann was no longer able to prevent the goal from being scored. Even when it was 2-0 a few seconds before the break, the goalkeeper was left alone by his front men on his first assignment for SVM. Thijmen Goppel completed a counterattack from the textbook.
SVM keeper Frommann fails on debut
Meppen, which was still weak after the Corona outbreak, was not without a chance – quite the opposite: But Christoph Hemlein (29th/38th), Lars Bünning (33rd) and Lukas Krüger (34th) were unable to take advantage of the best opportunities.
Instead, only the travel convoy from Wiesbaden, which also included seven SVWW fans in the guest block, cheered that evening. To make matters worse, goalkeeper Frommann looked bad several times in the second half. Only when Lucas Brummes shot in the 64th minute, which tumbled into the goal to make it 3-0. Before John Iredale’s fourth goal, the keeper misjudged a long ball and the Australian pushed into the empty goal (80′).
The Lower Saxony were even lucky: Iredale had scored twelve minutes earlier, but he was wrongly called off for offside. Due to the withdrawal from Türkgücü Munich, the Meppen team now have a longer break to regain their strength.
