“Very, very satisfied” with career
Captain Stefan Lex will not extend his contract with TSV 1860 Munich and will hang up his football boots. “I announced it before the season. The club needs clarity and I’ve created that now,” the 33-year-old confirmed on Friday when he retired. “I have decided to do this.”
Lex, who has been a 1860 fan since childhood, has been playing for the Munich “Löwen” since 2018. In 178 games to date, the attacker has contributed 35 goals and 51 assists. The right winger previously played for FC Ingolstadt 04 in the Bundesliga and second division after making his professional debut at the age of 24.
Looking back, the bottom line is that he is “very, very satisfied” with his career. “In the first six months in the A youth I played in the second team from Freising in the district league. When you see that and what came out of it at the end – nobody would have thought that at the time and least of all I.” The only flaw: the missed return to the 2nd division with 1860 Munich.

“We’ve been close in recent years, finishing fourth twice. There really wasn’t much missing,” said Lex, who would choose a different approach for the current season. “From the start, we made it our objective to get promoted. After a good start, we couldn’t cope with the pressure over the course of the season and couldn’t maintain our performance. As a player, I missed this goal.” TSV 1860 is in ninth place, only in the middle of the table in the 3rd division.
However, Lex will stay with the Munich team. “I will return to the lions in a different role in the fall,” he predicted. “I hope that I can then make my contribution, even if it is not active on the pitch.” The attacker has a bachelor’s degree in sports marketing. “Before that, I mainly studied and only played football on the side,” explained Lex. “It was important to my parents and me. Looking back, I’m glad it went that way.”
