37 dead and 25 more missing after landslide in India | Abroad

The number of deaths after the landslide in northeast India has risen to 37 three days after the disaster, according to a new balance on Sunday. It concerns employees involved in the construction of a railway, who were all buried by the rubble. Rescuers are still looking for 25 missing persons.

An official in Manipur state, where the incident took place, said some 18 people had been rescued. Most of the victims were reserve soldiers from the Territorial Army working on the railway project. The rescue work will continue on Sunday, but are hampered by the persistent rain.

The remote northeast of India has been hit by heavy rainfall in recent weeks, causing landslides and flooding. Earlier this year, at least ten people were killed in flooding and landslides caused by unusually heavy rain in various parts of the country.

According to experts, climate change is increasing the number of extreme weather events around the world, including in India. Dams, deforestation and development projects in India also contribute to disasters with a growing human toll.
