36 municipalities of AMB will have a common metropolitan system

  • The measure would involve police coordination and specific aspects such as night surveillance plans and the eradication of unsafe spaces

The executive vice-president of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, (AMB) Antonio Balmonannounced this Monday that the body will create “a comprehensive metropolitan security system” to promote “coordination and cooperation & rdquor; of the different police forces.

Balmón has ruled out that the plan includes a metropolitan police, and has explained that there is already a system similar to the one announced that for now brings together 12 municipalities of the AMBa prevention system called M7, which among other aspects consists of an application that the socialist has praised as an example of collaboration between territories: “Thanks to it, it has been possible to arrest people two municipalities beyond where the crime has occurred & rdquor ;.

The law of the WBA

“I’m not talking about a desire, I’m talking about a firm determination & rdquor ;, Balmón has underlined, specifying that the announced measure will be based on article 14 of the AMB law, a regulation approved by Parliament in 2010 that he has praised several times, recalling that it was possible thanks to the impulse of Joseph Montilla as president of the Generalitat but also of politicians from different spaces, such as the then leader of CiU Xavier Trias. Article 14 contemplates metropolitan action in favor of social cohesion and provides for policies on coexistence.

The vice president of the AMB defends that security management cannot be left only in the hands of each city council

The new system will involve night security plans in the metropolitan territory, reinforcement of public lighting, the eradication of unsafe spaces, night surveillance, night bus stops on demand, maps of safe spaces and specific plans for coastal areas and spaces natives of the AMB.

“Public space and coexistence cannot be degraded, we cannot afford it & rdquor ;, said the mayor of Cornellà, in a speech that sounds like a demand from the left not to leave this debate in the hands of others, which tends to promote the growth of political spaces that feed on the fear of insecurity, such as Vox’s.

in this mandate

But Balmón has not cited Vox. The executive vice president of the AMB has stressed that the objective of this metropolitan security system is to gain strength as a whole, act as a powerful interlocutor and coordinate the needs of the 36 municipalities in relation to security. The AMB, said Balmón, will open a dialogue with the Generalitat and the municipalities to pursue this coordination and cooperation.

The purpose is for this metropolitan security system to be a reality in this mandate, that is, for the proposal to be finalized before the 14 months remaining before the municipal elections of May 2023 have elapsed.

Balmón has put his announcement on the table in the framework of a dialogue of the cycle ‘Fer metròpoli’, organized by RethinkBCN, magazine of the Societat Barcelonina d’Estudis Econòmics i Socials de Foment del Treball (SBEES), of Foment del Treball. It was presented by Àngel Simón, Chairman of the SBEE Board of Sponsors and Chairman of Agbar.

The mayor of Cornellà has made a song to the institutional collaboration to get ahead in times of difficulty, such as those of a pandemic and a European war, and has denied that the AMB has any counter-power vocation, as was seen at the end of the 20th century by an important part of the CiU space, with the then president of the Generalitat, Jordi Pujol, at the head. A suspicion that reached its peak when Pujol annulled the WBA:

The dialogue, which took place at the Foment headquarters, was attended, among others, by former President Montilla; the leader of the PSC in the Parliament, Salvador Illa, and the president of the socialists in the Barcelona City Council, Jaume Collboni, among others.
