350 years Groningens Ontzet was a successful party | Statement of the day

The celebration of Groningens Relief this year was bigger than before, because of the 350th anniversary of the liberation of the city in 1672.

The celebration of Groningen’s Relief on August 28 (or a day earlier, if that date falls on a Sunday) has been in danger of declining a bit in recent years. Schoolchildren and civil servants are no longer automatically given time off at the ‘Bommen Berend’ party and many activities were experienced as old-fashioned.

This year, the Koninklijke Vereeniging van Volksvermaken made an extra effort. There was a parade, there were re-enactors who reenacted the battle of 1672, there was a theater spectacle and more extras. And of course, as always, the funfair, the Peerdespul and the Great Brilliant Fireworks on the Zuiderhaven. Was the party a success? Does it taste like more?
