342 million women and girls on the brink of extreme poverty

The motto for this UN Women 8Mthe organization that is part of United Nations and which was born with the aim of promoting gender equality throughout the world, it is “Invest in women, accelerate progress.”

Marginality, lack of education, economic inequality They are main ingredients of the set of violence that is exercised against this “minority” that, in reality, represents half of the population.

For this reason, this year, the institution especially insists on the need for states to pay attention to the issue. “By investing in women we can drive change and accelerate the transition towards a healthier, safer and more equal world for everyone,” they propose.

“If current trends continue, more than 342 million women and girls could live in extreme poverty in 2030. To ensure that women’s needs and priorities are taken into account, governments must prioritize financing with a gender perspective and increase public spending on essential services and social protection,” they diagnose.

Among the figures they provide to support their claims are the following data:

-Women perform 3 times more work unpaid than men. Especially what are called “care tasks”, for example, caring for the home, the elderly and children.

-More than half of the women who work do so in the informal economy. In the lowest paid jobs, they are the majority; In the best positions, they continue to be a minority.

The UN Women report investigated 15 cases

They all earn between 20% and 35% less than men in the same jobs and this gap is maintained in all types of companies.

The most encouraging data, however, indicate that if this gap were reduced, the benefits would imply an increase in the 20% of GDP per capita. And they estimate that an investment of 360,000 million dollars a year would collaborate in achieving gender equality.

The institution urges state governments to invest in women, also the main victims of environmental disasters resulting from climate change, as the only way to achieve sustainable and genuine development for their countries.
