Cyclists are usually involved in those accidents involving trucks and passenger cars. Lambrecht therefore advocates making intersections conflict-free as soon as possible.

At the beginning of last year, a fatal accident occurred at the intersection with the Brugse Ring and Generaal Lemanlaan. A truck driver who has to turn right fails to see a cyclist and hits her. A typical blind spot accident.

“A very dangerous point, the Gentpoort in Bruges, where there have already been two fatal accidents, recently, because it is too dangerous for blind spot accidents. The problem here is that if motorized traffic, a car or a truck turns, then that is actually the cyclist and pedestrian have too little space to pass safely and that all happens at the same time,” said Flemish member of parliament Annick Lambrecht.

This intersection is on the list to be addressed by the Flemish government. But it is going too slow according to MP Annick Lambrecht.
