Did a person die of or with Corona? This discussion has been going on since mid-March 2020, when the first person in Berlin died in connection with the virus.
The Berlin-Brandenburg State Statistical Office is now presenting figures that show how many deaths in 2020 Corona was really the cause of death.
Of the 72,275 people who died in Berlin and Brandenburg the year before last, 3,224 were due to Covid-19, which is 4.5 percent of deaths.
Circulatory diseases were the cause of death in 23,832 deaths (33 percent). The majority of the deceased were older than 85 years, women were affected more frequently than men.
Cancer was the second leading cause of death with 17,689 deaths. 3,453 deaths (4.8 percent) were not due to natural causes.
35,244 women and 37,031 men died in 2020, 8.3 percent more deaths than in the previous year.
