32 percent of Flemish people have been stuck in an elevator at least once | Domestic

The Lift Institute, in collaboration with the research agency Reputations, conducted a large-scale study in our country for the first time. No fewer than a thousand Flemish people were asked about their elevator experience at the end of 2023. The research shows that 32 percent of Flemish people have been stuck in an elevator at least once.

About 14 percent consciously choose not to take a lift anywhere. These people prefer to exercise, but fear is also a reason for never getting into an elevator. Most respondents are afraid that the power would go out, but the size (too small), age of the elevator and claustrophobia are also things that make Flemish people anxious when using an elevator.

The research shows that 32 percent of Flemish people have been stuck in an elevator at least once. On average it takes about an hour before a technician arrives. The vast majority remained calm and used the alarm button. Only 4 percent of Flemish people who were ever stuck in the elevator made an attempt to actually free themselves.

As many as 35 percent think an elevator can crash, but that’s not true. According to Liftinstituut, a smart security system ensures that the elevator can never fall down. The elevator cage in which the elevator passengers stand is attached to many cables. If you unexpectedly find yourself in a free fall, the safety device will ensure that you cannot crash. The lift owner is legally responsible for the safety of a lift. Depending on the age and type of lift, an inspection is carried out annually or every six months.
