In retrospect, September 27, 2017 can be seen as a historic day: the date marks FC Bayern Munich’s last defeat to date in a group game in the Champions League. It was 3-0 for the record champions’ team coached by Carlo Ancelotti in the “Parc des Princes” against Paris Saint-Germain, who were put on the road to victory early on by Dani Alves (2nd) and Edinson Cavani (31st). before Neymar put the lid on for the French in the 63rd minute (click here for the match report). In the ensuing 31 preliminary round games in the premier class, the Munich team went unbeaten, drew only three times and won 28 games – a new record in the history of the competition, previously held by Real Madrid, who went unbeaten 30 times between 2012 and 2017.

It was also the Spaniards who were to stop FCB later in the mentioned 17/18 season, but only in the semi-finals. Both clubs also lead the all-time ranking of the most CL victories overall: while Bayern have a record of 163 successes in 265 games, Real currently have 176 wins in 294 games.

In the statistics of the longest winning streak, the Germans are in the top 5 twice: Between September 2018 and November 2020, FC Bayern won 15 Champions League games in a row – the best to date. It is followed by AC Milan, who recorded 10 wins in a row between September 1992 and April 1993, as did Munich between April and November 2013 and Real between April 2014 and February 2015.

The 5-0 win over Viktoria Pilsen was also Bayern’s 10th win in a row in the group stage, a rate that only Madrilenians and FC Barcelona have matched to date.
