The Cure have announced a 30th anniversary reissue of their ninth studio album WISH. The record was released in 1992 and contains the singles “Friday I’m In Love”, “High” and “A Letter To Elise”. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and number two on the US Billboard 200.
Yesterday (July 28th) The Cure confirmed that the exclusive deluxe edition of WISH will be released on October 7th via UMC/Fiction/Polydor. The 2LP versions come out on November 25th and can here be pre-ordered. The collection features the entire original album, remastered by singer Robert Smith and Miles Showell at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in north west London.
The collection also includes 24 previously unreleased tracks – including demos, instrumentals and rare mixes, as well as four songs making their first appearance on CD and digital platforms. The 3CD edition includes four tracks from ‘Lost Wishes’, a mail order only cassette from 1993 never before available on CD or via streaming.
“We were hooked!”
According to a press release, WISH was formed during demo sessions at The Live House in Cornwall and continued at Farmyard Studios. Smith says, “We recorded about 40 songs during those two sessions. We were hooked!’. The singer continued, “There’s a side of the album that I kind of forgot, a very soft, longing thing that’s very beautiful. ‘Trust’ is one of the best tracks we’ve ever done I think, played with a lot of feeling and ‘To Wish Impossible Things’ is another beautiful, melancholic track…it might even be my favorite song on the record.” .
As early as 2018, Smith confirmed that the deluxe edition was ready. In an interview with the “NME” this year, however, he said that he was still working on the project. “There are so many demos of Simon [Gallup (Bassist)], who never got past the demo stage and stayed instrumental – simply because I couldn’t find the words for them. It’s really sad because some of them were really great! They all come out as instrumentals and I think there are about 36 unreleased songs that appear on the pack. It’s the same every time we do something. There’s always a lot of music, and a lot of it is by Simon. I’m at a loss for words!” he said.
The Cure: SONGS OF A LOST WORLD
The Cure have worked on two records. At the BandLab NME Awards 2022 in March, Smith revealed that one of them will be called SONGS OF A LOST WORLD. He announced: “It’s got an artwork, it’s got an order, it’s almost done! They are so slow because of the vinyl but it could come in September. I’d rather it just came out. I can’t stand the anticipation. The first Cure album is unforgiving and dark. It’s the darkest thing we’ve ever done. The second is cheerful and mine [Solo]album won’t be out until next year”.
Referring to the first completed album, he added: “It’s essentially a 12-track album. It’s there, sort of half mixed and half done. It’s a strange thing. It kind of evolved over the last two years. It wasn’t always a good thing to be left alone with that. If you poke at it, like at the seams, it all falls apart. The wait will be worth it. I think it’s the best thing we’ve done, but I’d say that too. I don’t mean Oasis when I say ‘It’s the best damn album’. A lot of the songs are difficult to sing, so it took me a while.”
