MSV Duisburg’s winning streak ended after three games. MSV saved a point against promoted VfB Oldenburg on the sixth day of the game after falling behind.
Both teams drew 1-1 (0-0) on Monday evening. Kamer Krasniqi put the visitors ahead after 47 minutes, Benjamin Girth equalized in the 72nd minute. The MSV missed the leap to third place and is sixth with eleven points. Promoted Oldenburg has five points and is 14th.
Despite a good start for MSV, the guests had the first significant chance of the game. Max Wegner headed the ball from seven yards out, but MSV keeper Vincent Müller scraped the ball out of the corner (8′).
However, Duisburg remained dominant. In the early stages, Chinedu Ekene fired a long-range shot that narrowly missed the left post.
Badjie awards detached
The game then flattened out noticeably. Oldenburg defended disciplined, the MSV sometimes lacked the last conviction. MSV got lucky in the 30th minute when Kebba Badjie, standing free in front of the goal, didn’t hit the ball properly.
Shortly before the break, however, the hosts picked up speed again. Caspar Jander served Marvin Ajani in the 42nd minute, but he only hit the outer post from the right corner of the penalty area. Only two minutes later, Moritz Stoppelkamp had the lead on his foot, but his shot was blocked by ex-Duisburger Oliver Steuer just before the line.
Shock for Duisburg after the break
After the change of sides, however, the Duisburg team was caught off guard. The ball landed over Wegner at Krasniqi, who spun around his opponent in the penalty area and hit the corner low from 13 meters to give Oldenburg a surprising lead (47′).
Duisburg tried to respond quickly and squeezed VfB in their own half. But without becoming dangerous. Oldenburg, on the other hand, became dangerous twice on occasional advances. Goalkeeper Müller saved again in the 56th minute against Badjie’s too weak shot, two minutes later Rafael Brand just missed the goal after a counterattack.
Girth scores after a substitution
MSV trainer Torsten Ziegner then brought, among other things, newcomer Girth for the storm center. And that should be worth it. Marvin Frey, who also came on as a substitute, prevailed against two opponents in a header duel in the penalty area and brought the ball centrally in front of the goal, where Girth took the ball directly and scored to equalize (72′).
The goal came as a bit of a surprise because it was actually better for VfB in this phase. In the final phase both teams played for victory. MSV had the last chance. In the last minute of stoppage time, an Oldenburger blocked a header from Marvin Bakalorz in front of the line.
MSV now has a demanding task ahead of them and will play table leaders TSV 1860 Munich next Saturday (2 p.m.). At the same time, Oldenburg welcomes VfL Osnabrück.
