At the end of the group phase in the Champions League, the SC Potsdam volleyball team got another win.
On Wednesday evening they beat Red Star Belgrade 3:1 (25:18, 25:13, 22:25, 25:23) in their home MBS Arena and thus say goodbye with three wins and three losses in third place premier class.
Even before the game, this placement and thus the European whereabouts of the Brandenburg women were certain. Third in the group, they are now entering the quarter-finals of the second-rate CEV Cup. The goal set by sports director Toni Rieger for the European competition was thus achieved.
Decline in the third set
The Potsdam women set themselves apart from the Belgrade women early on in the first set. Two aces in a row from setter Sarah van Aalen gave the team a 10:5 lead. With a double block by Anett Nemeth and Veronika Djokic, the hosts immediately increased it to 11: 5. In the end, Hester Jasper converted the first set ball.
The Potsdam women then continued to expand their superiority against the winless group bottom. When Fleur Savelkoel from the Netherlands served, they pulled away to 18:9 in the second round. The hostesses had clear advantages in the areas of block, field defense and service.
Victory is almost lost
When coach Guillermo Hernandez mostly sent his substitute players onto the field in the third set, things turned around. The Serbs became more powerful, also due to a strong slacking off on the other side.
The actually already clear victory of the SCP became a hard piece of work. After 24:19 only the fifth match point, converted by set player van Aalen, finally decided the game.
