Borussia Dortmund took advantage of Bayern Munich’s defeat and took the lead with a win in Augsburg. BVB can now become champions with a home win against Mainz 05.
Dortmund won 3-0 (0-0) at FC Augsburg on Sunday (May 21, 2023). Sebastien Haller (58′, 84′) and Julian Brandt (90’+4′) scored the goals for BVB.
The constellation: A win means the title
Dortmund now has it in their own hands: A win on Saturday (May 27, 2023, 3:30 p.m.) in the home game against Mainz 05 would mean winning the title. Should BVB not win the game, they would have to rely on Bayern not winning at 1. FC Köln either.

In Augsburg, BVB was overwhelmingly superior in the first half, but it was 0-0 at the break. Karim Adeyemi (10th), Haller (21st) and Julian Brandt (33rd) initially missed the best chances. Augsburg’s Felix Uduokhai saw the red card for an emergency brake against Brandt in the 38th minute, after the resulting free kick Niklas Süle hit the right post with a header (40th).
Even with a majority, Dortmund had a hard time against the Augsburg defense for a long time. Emre Can hit the post with a long-range shot (54′). It was not until the 58th minute that Haller scored the goal that brought Dortmund very close to the championship trophy: Augsburg’s Maximilian Bauer missed the ball in the centre, Haller grabbed the ball and scored to make it 1-0 for BVB.
Dortmund had to survive one situation in particular: Augsburg’s Irvin Cardona appeared free in front of the goal, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a save (63′). Substitute Marco Reus then started the redeeming 2-0: He failed to goalkeeper Tomas Koubek, but Haller dusted off (84th). Brandt increased the lead to 3:0 (90+4) in added time.

FC Augsburg is now 14th in the table. and is only two points ahead of the relegation place. At the end of the season, Augsburg plays at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
