In the Bundesliga derby against VC Olympia, the BR Volleys are well recovered from the difficult cup game against Lüneburg. The league record remains flawless.

After the small Berlin derby in the Bundesliga, winners and losers alike felt joy. “We found a really good attitude and can be satisfied with the result,” commented middle blocker Anton Brehme from BR Volleys on his team’s 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-16) victory over VC Olympia Berlin on Saturday.

But Marius Eckardt from the defeated opponent also enjoyed the game. “It’s just fun to compete at this level,” said the only 19-year-old VCO Libero.

Perfect first half of the volleys

For the BR Volleys, the first half of the season ends in first place. The team has won all eight Bundesliga games and is in the cup semi-final against Grizzlys Giesen on December 21st.

The value of this national dominance will next be examined at the European level. On Wednesday, an extraordinarily difficult test awaits the German champions in the Champions League at Warta Zawiercie in Poland.

The BR Volleys can’t afford weak phases like against the VCO in the second set, which was won only with difficulty. Anton Brehme admitted: “Our rhythm wasn’t there.” Of course, that was also due to the fact that in the Sportforum regulars like Marek Sotola, Ruben Schott and Satoshi Tsuiki were given a break in their fourth competitive game in just ten days.

After all, the Volleys had thrown SVG Lüneburg 3:2 out of the cup just 48 hours earlier after a 27:25 marathon tiebreak. “After this tough game it wasn’t that easy for us mentally against the VCO,” said Brehme, who contributed ten points to the win and was only surpassed by outside attacker Antti Ronkainen. The Finn scored 13 points and not only underlined his well-known strengths on serve with three aces. That also gives hope for the upcoming game in Zawiercie.
