Joker Timo Werner and his club Tottenham Hotspur celebrated an away win in the Premier League in a direct duel for Champions League qualification at Aston Villa. On Sunday, the Londoners won 4-0 in Birmingham and moved up to fifth place (53 points) to within two points of the “Villans” (55) with one game less.
Werner, who moved to “Spurs” from RB Leipzig in January on loan and with an option to buy, marked the final score in the fourth minute of stoppage time. It was the 28-year-old’s second goal for Tottenham and the second in a row, having scored in the 3-1 win against Crystal Palace a week ago.
The 57-time national player only came on shortly before the end (87th) for James Maddison, who had put Tottenham in front in the 50th minute. Brennan Johnson made it 2-0 just three minutes later, and ex-Bundesliga striker Heung-min Son also scored three minutes before Werner. Aston Villa had to play with ten men from the 65th minute after John McGinn was shown a red card for a serious foul on Destiny Udogie.
Coach Unai Emery’s team has only lost twice at home in Premier League history: 6-0 against Liverpool in 2015/16 and 6-1 against Manchester City in 2019/20. Against Tottenham it was the third 4-0 defeat at Villa Park since the league was founded (among Aston Villa’s record games).
Arsenal top Premier League for now after Havertz’s winning goal
Thanks to match winner Kai Havertz, Arsenal have taken the lead in the Premier League, at least until Sunday. The national player headed the late winning goal for the Londoners at home on Saturday to make it 2-1 (1-1) against city rivals FC Brentford. With 64 points, Arsenal is in first place. Liverpool FC follow one point behind, defending champions Man City are another point behind in third place. The two pursuers face each other in the top game on Sunday (4.45 p.m./Sky).
With his eighth goal of the season in the 86th minute, Havertz redeemed the hosts, who also won their eighth league game this year, but had a lot more trouble than last time. “These points were so important for us and you could see that in the second half. We didn’t show our best performance in the first half. “To win like that is even better,” said Havertz to the TV channel “Sky”.
Declan Rice also headed the lead in the 19th minute. The surprising equalizer by Yoane Wissa (45th + 4) was favored by substitute goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who knocked the ball away too late and then hit Wissa. “We all talked to each other at halftime and wanted a turnaround,” reported Havertz. “Mistakes are part of the game. I made mistakes that led to goals.” Rice’s shot in the second half only hit the woodwork (74′) before Havertz was successful.
The Gunners continue in the Champions League on Tuesday. In the second leg of the round of 16 against FC Porto, Arsenal want to make up for the 1-0 defeat from the first leg.
