Thomforde had already made his first appearances as a substitute for two seasons before he took over the regular place in the third-tier league in 1985. After promotion, he remained the most used goalkeeper for another season before Volker Ippig rebelled again.

At the beginning of the 80s, Ippig was allowed to play in the major leagues as a 19-year-old. In 1987/88, the Hafenstrasse resident caught up with Thomforde after appearances and became a regular after the Bundesliga promotion in ’88, but replaced Thomforde again in 89/90. After relegation, Thomforde was again mainly in goal. Ippig had to end his career because of back problems. But Thomforde’s career as a regular employee was soon interrupted again.
Andreas Reinke – regular goalkeeper 1993/94

From 1994/95, when the next Bundesliga promotion was achieved, Thomforde dominated Hamburg’s goal. René Müller and Frank Böse, later Carsten Wehlmann, were only granted individual appearances. Since Thomforde, there has been no one who has played for St. Pauli for such a long period of time as substitute keeper Benedikt Pliquett (since 2005), who played his maximum season of ten league games in 2011/12.
