2nd division: Schalke loses against Hansa Rostock, Okoroji with a corner goal, St. Pauli beats KSC

St. Pauli beats KSC

For FC Schalke 04, the new era started with little success without its long-standing main sponsor Gazprom. After the 3:4 (2:2) against FC Hansa Rostock, coach Dimtrios Grammozis’ team fell further behind in the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga. In front of 28,790 spectators, the Rostock goalscorers Svante Ingelsson (25th), John Verhoek (40th), Pascal Breier (56th) and Nils Fröling (90th + 6th) caused disillusionment among the hosts on Saturday, who already had the new sponsor Vivawest and the lettering “Together for Peace”.

Despite Simon Terodde’s three goals (33rd/43rd/83rd), the Bundesliga relegated team is already six points behind in second place. Rostock, on the other hand, gained a little breathing space in the relegation battle by jumping to 14th place.

Schalke took control from the start, but after two exemplary counterattacks by the guests, they fell behind twice with goals from Ingelsson and Verhoek. But with his 17th and 18th goals of the season, Terodde headed his team back into the game before half-time. Schalke also found a sporting response to the recent Hansa goal shortly after the break by Breier. Terodde’s third header was not enough to win the point, however, because Fröling scored in injury time.

Hannover 96 is defeated in Sandhausen: Okoroji scores with a direct corner

Thanks to the involuntary help of Hannover 96, SV Sandhausen took the next step towards remaining in the second division. The relegation-threatened Baden defeated the Lower Saxony 3-1 (2-1) and remained unbeaten in the sixth competitive game in a row. In the table, Sandhausen moved up to two points behind the guests, who are also far from being saved in twelfth place. When the SVS scored, Hanover’s cover looked anything but good.

Full-back Chima Okoroji put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute with a direct corner from the right that flew over Hannover keeper Ron-Robert Zieler. Shortly after 96 captain Marcel Franke made it 2-0 with an own goal (19′), offensive man Sebastian Stolze scored the goal for the guests from close range (21′). In the second half, Martin Hansen surprisingly guarded the Lower Saxony goal instead of Zieler. 96 pushed for the equalizer but didn’t manage it. Instead, Janik Bachmann used a mistake by guest defender Niklas Hult to make it 3-1 (81st).

FC St. Pauli scores against KSC – and for the fight for promotion

FC St. Pauli is not giving up in the fight for promotion. In the home game against Karlsruher SC, the neighborhood club celebrated a deserved 3-1 (3-0) win and moved up to second place in the table, at least temporarily.

In front of 22,159 spectators, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (14th/25th minute) and Simon Makienok (34th) scored the goals for the team with the strongest performance at home in the 2nd division. Philipp Hofmann (66th) scored for KSC, who only woke up after the break and conceded their second defeat in Hamburg within four days after the cup knockout at HSV.
