2nd Bundesliga: Three clubs in a long-distance duel: who has to go to relegation?

Status: 05/25/2023 12:35 p.m

Who has detention and hold their own in two games against the third in the 3rd division? In the relegation battle of the second Bundesliga, the only question on the last day of the game is who ends up in relegation rank 16.

SV Sandhausen has long been the first relegated club. SSV Jahn Regensburg is three points behind the first rank that saves them and with a goal difference that is 15 goals worse they only have very theoretical chances.

One point is not enough for Bielefeld

Arminia Bielefeld is on the relegation rank before the big relegation final with 34 points. The team from East Westphalia must definitely win at 1. FC Magdeburg in order to be able to move out of 16th place, since 1. FC Nürnberg (15th place) and Eintracht Braunschweig have two points more on 36 points each. One point is not enough for Arminia.

If Nuremberg (at SC Paderborn) and Braunschweig (at Hansa Rostock) win, they will also play in the second division next season. In the event of a draw and a Bielefeld win, the goal difference would decide – here Arminia (-8) goes into the showdown with advantages over Nuremberg (-18) and Braunschweig (-16).

Hecking has two jobs at stake

Nuremberg had three chances in the past few weeks to avoid such a situation on the last day of the game. But just recently it was only enough for a 0:0 at home against Hansa Rostock. In Magdeburg it was 2-2, and against 1. FC Kaiserslautern the “Club” led 3-1 until the 88th minute before conceding two more goals.

Since his return to the coaching bench, Dieter Hecking has not managed to bring about the hoped-for turnaround. The 58-year-old is actually a sports director for Franconia. In the event of a relegation, he would probably lose two jobs at once. When Hecking installed himself as the successor to the hapless Markus Weinzierl by the end of the season in February, the chairman of the supervisory board, Thomas Grethlein, made it clear that his most important employee was with this action “Going all-in in a way. He’s putting his job at risk.”

Braunschweig’s Ujah: “We still have it in our own hands”

Braunschweig did not do better than Nuremberg in terms of results. Last weekend, the “Lions” missed the great opportunity to bag the league. After a 1-0 lead, they lost 2-1 to Regensburg at home. “It’s still in our own hands and we’re not giving up”said forward Anthony Ujah. “Now we have to work through this defeat, get over it, stay positive and secure the necessary points in Rostock.”explained coach Michael Schiele.

Bielefeld’s Jäkel: “Full of victory”

Bielefeld was also in the lead twice recently against Paderborn, but did not bring the lead to the finish. “The game must never end in a draw. That’s unbelievable. We wanted to stay up in the league on our own with two wins, but we didn’t manage that today.”, said Captain Fabian Klos. Meanwhile, Frederik Jäkel is aggressive: “Now we’re going to Magdeburg and just playing hard for a win there.”
