2nd Bundesliga: SV Darmstadt in 1st place – Nuremberg wins in Düsseldorf

BTSV continues series at FCM

SV Darmstadt 98 has taken the lead in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Hessians won late on Saturday at Karlsruher SC 2-1 (0-1) and ousted Hamburger SV from first place. A day earlier, Hamburg had lost the city duel at FC St. Pauli 0:3. SC Paderborn can also overtake HSV on Sunday with a win against SV Sandhausen.

1. FC Nürnberg scored their first win under new coach Markus Weinzierl with a 1-0 (0-0) win at Fortuna Düsseldorf, while the Rhinelanders lost a home game for the first time since January. Promoted Eintracht Braunschweig continued its upward trend and remained unbeaten in the sixth game in a row thanks to the 2-0 (0-0) win at fellow promoted team 1. FC Magdeburg.

Tietz shoots Darmstadt 98 against KSC late at the top of the second division table

SV Darmstadt 98 has secured the top of the table. The “Lilien”, who have now been unbeaten for eleven games, turned a deficit into a 2-1 (0-1) win at Karlsruher SC. Phillip Tietz scored the winning goal for Darmstadt in the 88th minute.

In front of 19,391 fans, KSC was the better team for much of the first half and took the lead after a precise free-kick from Philip Heise. The in-form Fabian Schleusener (19th minute) headed into the bottom left corner for his fifth goal of the season. Less than ten minutes later, not much was missing and the Badeners of coach Christian Eichner would have been even clearer in front. Christoph Zimmermann cleared Malik Batmaz’ shot for the guests on the line (27′).

Darmstadt tried to put pressure on just before half-time, but without creating top chances. That changed shortly after the break: central defender Patric Pfeiffer equalized with a header from a corner by Tobias Kempe (49′). Coach Torsten Lieberknecht made the change at halftime, his team played more aggressively and initially posed problems for the Karlsruhe team. Another Darmstadt goal by Pfeiffer was disallowed because of a handball after video evidence (64′). Tietz then let the Darmstadt team cheer.

Weinzierl celebrates his first victory as a Nuremberg coach: 1-0 at Fortuna Düsseldorf

Markus Weinzierl celebrated his first win with 1. FC Nürnberg. A week after the home defeat against Holstein Kiel, the football teacher, who coached very committedly on the sidelines, was happy about a hard-fought 1-0 (0-0) at Fortuna Düsseldorf. In front of 25,750 fans, attacker Kwadwo Duah scored the winning goal for the “club”. In the 47th minute, the Swiss threw himself into a cross from midfielder Jens Castrop in the penalty area, which he volleyed with his right foot.

In contrast to the 2: 3 against Kiel, Nuremberg did not lose strength again after an hour of play against Fortuna, who was strong at home. Weinzierl’s team acted rather stable. “We need results. Defend consistently and become more effective up front,” was Weinzierl’s announcement before kick-off on “Sky”. This has been implemented. It was the first home defeat for Düsseldorf since January, at that time also with 0:1 against Nuremberg.

The diamond in midfield with Lino Tempelmann as a ten worked well for the guests. The dynamic Tempelmann just missed the opening goal shortly before the break with two good shots. After the Duah hit, Fortuna pushed with substitute goalscorer Rouwen Hennings. But Nuremberg defended passionately and concentrated. With 13 points, the “Club” was able to pull away a little. Weinzierl’s work seems to be taking hold.

1. FC Magdeburg loses against Eintracht Braunschweig in a promoted duel

1. FC Magdeburg lost the promoted duel against Eintracht Braunschweig, the Elbestadt lost 0:2 (0:0). Magdeburg was initially the dominant team in the home MDCC Arena and not only had more possession of the ball, but also the more conspicuous actions in the opposing penalty area. Over time, however, the guests from Lower Saxony, who have now been unbeaten for six games in a row, got into the game better and better.

The first goal came in the 51st minute, Magdeburg’s captain Amara Condé unluckily deflected a cross into his own goal. The decision came in added time with a goal by Bryan Henning (90+5). Magdeburg is second to last after the defeat, Braunschweig has moved up to tenth place after their first away win.
