FC Hansa Rostock has found a successor for the fired coach Alois Schwartz. Mersad Selimbegovic is supposed to save Mecklenburg from relegation from the 2nd league.

The table 16th shared that. on Monday evening. Selimbegovic recently looked after SSV Jahn Regensburg for almost four years. He was released from the Bavarian second division team last season three game days before the end of the season – after a 2-0 defeat at FC Hansa. Now the Bosnian from Rogatica is supposed to save the North Germans from falling into the third league.

The 41-year-old succeeds Schwartz at the Hanseatic League, from whom the Rostock team parted ways after the 2-0 defeat against FC Schalke 04 on the day before last. Selimbegovic signed a contract with the Mecklenburgers until 2025, which is only valid for the second division.

Walter relies on “active and courageous football”

“Mersad Selimbegovic is a down-to-earth and value-oriented coach who plays active and courageous football with lots of pressing elements. Mersad also has experience from four second division seasons and is therefore very familiar with this league,” said Hansa sports director Kristian Walter. The 39-year-old had suggested Selimbegovic to the supervisory board as Schwartz’s successor, and the control committee then approved his commitment.

“I’m full of energy and ready for new tasks”

Much to the delight of the new coach, who is bursting with enthusiasm. “I’m really looking forward to the exciting challenge here at Hansa. I’m full of energy and ready for new tasks. The conditions in Rostock and in the team are there to be able to play successful football here. I’m looking forward to it, the entire team On the first day of training we finally got to meet each other in person and get started with the boys,” said Selimbegovic.

He is also supported at Hansa by Markus Palionis, who was already his assistant coach in Regensburg. The former Lithuanian international also signed a working paper dated until 2025.

Hansa second coaching station for Selimbegovic

For Selimbegovic, Rostock is his second stop as head coach. After the end of his active career, in which he played for SSV Jahn from 2006 to 2012, he initially became assistant coach for the second Regensburg team. The 41-year-old later took over the U19 team, became assistant coach of the professionals (2017) and was finally promoted to head coach of the second division team in 2019.

“During his long time in Regensburg, he was able to impress with his successful work, despite modest means. He can develop both players and teams, those were the core points of our requirement profile,” explained Walter.
