The police are planning a major operation on Saturday when the two northern second division teams Hansa Rostock and FC St. Pauli meet. The main focus is on the strict separation of the rival fan camps.
To secure the encounter, which will kick off at 1 p.m. (in the live center at NDR.de) in the Ostseestadion, in addition to officers from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state police, forces from Hamburg and the federal police will also be on duty, the Rostock police station announced . There was no information about the exact number of police officers in the area surrounding the high-risk game.
2,600 St. Pauli fans are expected
“Every game with increased risk represents a special challenge for the police, the clubs and all other players involved. The police will communicate with everyone involved at an early stage during the operation and also expects positive impulses for a peaceful football encounter from the clubs and fan scenes,” said it further in the message.
One of the most important tasks – as is always the case when the two teams meet – is the strict separation of the rival fan camps. Attention is also being paid to the journey of the 2,600 St. Pauli fans. The Rostock police department also stated that it wanted to protect other places in the city.
“We have seen a very worrying trend in the nationwide observation of events at football games in recent weeks.”
— Rostock police chief Achim Segebarth
