2nd Bundesliga: Düsseldorf beats Braunschweig and is top of the table

Fortuna Düsseldorf has jumped to the top of the 2nd Bundesliga table, at least temporarily, with a convincing win against bottom club Eintracht Braunschweig. The Rhinelanders won 4:1 (2:0) in Lower Saxony on Friday (October 27, 2023).

Christos Tziolis and Vincent Vermeij gave Fortuna an early lead with a double strike (12th, 14th). After the break, Florian Krüger shortened the score for the hosts (59′), but Jamil Siebert restored Düsseldorf’s two-goal lead. Ao Tanaka made the final result perfect (90+8). With the three-point win, Fortuna Düsseldorf now has 21 points, at least for the time being, moving past the three northern German clubs Holstein Kiel, Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli into first place in the table.

Braunschweig came last with just five points

The Braunschweigers, where interim coach Marc Pfitzner replaced Jens Härtel on leave on Monday, remain bottom with just five points after their eighth defeat of the season.

Due to the delayed arrival of almost 19,500 spectators, the game started around 15 minutes late. And Fortuna where it left off in the roaring 4:3 win after being 0:3 behind against 1. FC Kaiserslautern – after just under a quarter of an hour the situation was already clear.

“It was a huge challenge after last weekend, the height of the fall was very high”said F95 trainer Daniel Thioune on Sky, “In the moments when we played football, Braunschweig had difficulties. The boys played a good game.”

Fortuna welcomes Wiesbaden, Braunschweig in Hanover

At the start of the next matchday in the 2nd Bundesliga, Düsseldorf welcomes SV Wehen Wiesbaden (Friday, November 3rd, 2023 at 6:30 p.m.). Eintracht Braunschweig faces a challenge in Hanover two days later (1:30 p.m.).
