2nd Bundesliga: Danny Latza gives Schalke 04 the next three points

Nuremberg slowed down

FC Schalke 04 celebrated their first away win of this season in the 2nd Bundesliga. New coach Karel Geraerts’ team won the traditional duel at 1. FC Nürnberg with substitute Danny Latza’s goal in the 89th minute and left the relegation zone after their second win in a row. SpVgg Greuther Fürth was also able to celebrate thanks to a 2-0 (1-0) win at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The Franconians climbed further in the table with 18 points. The penultimate VfL Osnabrück missed a win against Holstein Kiel shortly before the end.

Dominick Drexler gave Schalke the lead in the 36th minute. Florian Flick equalized against his former club (47th). In the second half, Nuremberg were the better team, but were unable to capitalize on their chances to score. On Saturday, Latza headed the goal from a free kick in the 89th minute to make it 2-1 (1-0) for the guests. The club from Middle Franconia was suddenly thwarted on its way up after three wins in four games.

Holstein Kiel stayed in touch with the promotion places in the 2nd Bundesliga with a late goal at VfL Osnabrück. Thanks to Benedikt Pichler’s goal (90+4), Kiel managed a 1-1 (0-0:) draw with Lower Saxony, who were threatened with relegation, on Saturday. Dave Gnaase (55th) was successful for Osnabrück.

1. FC Kaiserslautern suffered their second home defeat of the season. The Palatinate lost against SpVgg Greuther Fürth 0:2 (0:1) and fell back in the table to eighth place, still 18 points behind their rivals, who were now tied on points. Gideon Jung in the 23rd minute and Julian Green (54th/foul penalty) scored the goals for the guests on Saturday. Kaiserslautern only finished the game with nine men. First Boris Tomiak (69th) was shown a red card for assault, then Kevin Kraus was eliminated in stoppage time with a head injury and could not be replaced because the substitution quota had already been exhausted.
