Today it was announced that 38 projects spread across 20 municipalities will receive a contribution totaling 280 million euros from the Public Housing Fund (VHF). This money will be used to improve 13,000 homes. The quality of life is under pressure in various areas throughout the Netherlands. That is why the government created the Public Housing Fund. This is what Minister Hugo de Jonge of the Interior and Kingdom Relations writes in a letter to the House of Representatives.

The Housing Fund has been in existence since 2021. €280 million was available for the second tranche this year. The 60 registered projects together amounted to €480 million, making the scheme largely oversubscribed. A VHF review committee examined the applications in November in order to arrive at an assessment. The table below shows the 38 projects that receive a contribution. Together these are good for improving approximately 13,000 homes, spread across 20 municipalities.

About the Public Housing Fund

The VHF is a scheme through which municipalities can receive subsidies to improve the quality of life and promote safety in vulnerable areas. The subsidy is primarily intended for improving private housing (renovation and sustainability), transformation of real estate into homes, replacement new construction and consolidation (acquisition for restructuring). In addition, the subsidy can also be used for the design of the surrounding public space and the realization of social facilities near the homes.

“In the most vulnerable neighborhoods in the Netherlands, the quality of housing and the living environment is under pressure. Twenty municipalities throughout the Netherlands will jointly receive 280 million from the Public Housing Fund for renovation, sustainability and restructuring. In this way we prevent residents from falling behind and ensure a safe and pleasant living environment.” Hugo de Jonge, Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations

Distribution of priority areas

In the VHF scheme, Urban Focus Areas and border regions are given priority. Of the municipalities that have received an allocation, 10 municipalities belong to the 20 urban focus areas, 9 municipalities are a border region and 1 municipality does not belong to a priority area.

Possibility of rapid new application in 2024

In order to quickly give the municipalities that have not yet received a contribution and all other municipalities a chance again, the third tranche of the Public Housing Fund will be opened at the beginning of February 2024. The counter for the fourth tranche of 2024 will open in the usual period, from June 1 to October 1.
