“28 Days Later” becomes a trilogy

“28 Days Later” was one of the most important science fiction horror films of the 2000s. Cillian Murphy achieved her international breakthrough with the lead role Jim. After the box office success, a sequel to the apocalyptic story followed in 2007 with “28 Weeks Later” (Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 2007). Since then, fans have been waiting (so far in vain) for a sequel.

Until today, because Deadline has confirmed that writer Danny Boyle and director Alex Garland are reuniting for 28 Years Later. The plans for the film will be presented to potential buyers in the coming days, including both traditional film studios and streaming services.

Trilogy planned

“Hollywood Reporter” writes that “28 Years Later” is planned with a budget of around $75 million. The first part cost around eight million US dollars and grossed 85 million. “28 Weeks Later” had a budget of $15 million and grossed $65 million. The planned sequel would therefore be the most expensive part of the End Times series.

Boyle and Garland want to bring the story into a coherent trilogy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“28 Years Later”: When can we expect a cinema release?

Since the casting process hasn’t even started yet and no studio or streaming service has been determined yet, it will probably take a while before filming starts. “28 Days Later” fans can expect the sequel at the end of 2025 at the earliest, and probably not until 2026.
