This year marks ten years since Saar died. Her family holds a memorial vigil every year. Last Sunday – on World Light Day – 250 people gathered in Gits to commemorate Saar. The tour went from the site of the accident – where her bicycle has remained as a memorial all these years – to the cemetery. Friends and family released white balloons there.
It remains extremely difficult for Saar’s parents. “Every day we have to gather our courage to continue and do what we have to do. We have to continue, we have to work. We still have children and now also grandchildren,” say Ann and Bart.
