22-year-old clockmaker: ‘I think I’m the youngest in Europe’

Whoever thinks of the craft of antique clock repair will probably expect someone older. But in Frederiksoord, 22-year-old Ilse Wieringa has had her own company in this sector for a month now. She repairs antique clocks and sells them in her shop. That is quite remarkable for someone her age.

Wieringa receives her first customers even before the store opens. It’s the tourist season and that’s what she needs in Frederiksoord, which is located in Unesco’s Colonies of Benevolence. “Tourists who walk around in the garden here, but especially people who are interested in clocks or who have a broken clock themselves,” she explains.

In her shop she repairs antique clocks. Today it is a marble pendulum that has come to a standstill.
