Viktoria Berlin surprises leaders 1. FC Magdeburg in wind and rain and jumps to a non-relegation zone!
Farat Toku’s team won 2-1 (1-0) on Monday at the end of the 32nd matchday of the 3rd soccer league on the hard-to-play lawn of the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark.
In front of 4,334 spectators – mostly visiting fans – Jakob Lewald put the hosts ahead after 19 minutes, Soufian Benyamina increased it to 2-0 shortly after the break (46th). Kai Brünker only managed to get the goal back (76th). After the fifth defeat of the season, Magdeburg still has an eight-point lead over the promotion relegation place. Viktoria climbed to 16th place with the first win of the year – the first non-relegation zone.
The leaders, with captain Alexander Bittroff returning to the starting XI, took charge from the start and pushed the hosts in front of their own goal. The lead for the promoted team was all the more surprising. After a free kick by Brooklyn Ezeh, Lewald was able to head into the far corner (19′). Magdeburg increased their efforts, but could not convert even the best opportunities. In the 25th minute, Tatsuya Ito was unable to place the ball from three meters into the empty goal.
The second half of the game began with a bang, in which Magdeburg wanted to step up their attacking efforts by bringing in Luca Schuler. 44 seconds after the restart, however, Benyamina shocked the guests with a fine individual performance to make it 2-0.
Despite their superiority in the game, Magdeburg didn’t seem so compelling in the course of the second half, but drew new hope after Brünker’s connection after a corner from Baris Atik. But the Berlin defense stood firm and didn’t allow any more goals.
