2023 was record warm, but what does that actually say?

Once again a year will go down as the warmest ever. Records have been broken time and time again in recent decades. The heat is accompanied by extreme weather, such as excessive rainfall, hailstones the size of handballs and numerous forest fires. When is something extreme weather, and when is it a symptom of a larger process? How do we know that? And how useful is it to always report records?
