2021 was a year of extremes for Europe from a climatic point of view

The past year 2021 was climatically characterized in Europe by extremes and contrasts. This is evident from the annual report of the European climate service Copernicus. The continent experienced its hottest summer on record, with temperatures reaching 1 degree above the average between 1991 and 2020. However, there were also severe floods in Wallonia and western Germany in July, and the Mediterranean region faced an intense heat wave in the summer months.
