201 tons of waste cleared along regional roads in West Flanders
The cost of cleaning up that waste in our province alone cost more than 300,000 euros. “After all these years of raising awareness, illegal dumping remains a persistent social problem, also in our car parks,” says Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters. “Cleaning up that waste also costs a lot of money. For 2022 alone, the clean-up and processing costs for waste along our Flemish regional and motorways will amount to 3.8 million euros. Everyone pays for the antisocial behavior of some individuals and that is a very unfortunate thing.”

The clean-up and processing costs are highest in the provinces of Antwerp and East Flanders. Lowest in West Flanders. A well-known hotspot is the carpool parking in Ruddervoorde.
Since last year, there are 12 regional supervisors who warn or verbalize offenders. They catch in the act or they identify the offender while searching the garbage. AWV wants to organize 46 enforcement actions per year per province.
